Self-care is healthcare. It’s deserving of your time because it helps you feel so good. When you’re at your best, you’re more compelled to help others. You’re better equipped to do so, too.
Here is how to be better to yourself in five easy steps:
- Listen to and respond to your body’s cues. If you’re tired, rest. If you’re hungry, eat. If you’re thirsty, drink. Don’t postpone these activities because they can negatively affect your health and well-being. Learn to pay attention to what your body is telling you, so you don’t miss an important cue indicating you’re sick or something else is medically wrong.
- Make it a point to move your body every day. Walk or bike to places. Do yoga or play tennis. Swim when you can. Make it a point to move your body as much as possible. Buying a pedometer and counting the steps you take throughout the day is a good place to start.
- Schedule appointments to see your medical care team. Include your OBGYN Dr. Ahmadinia when scheduling your care for the year. He will do a full examination upon your request and let you know how often you should follow up with him. That way, you’re able to protect your health with good preventative care.
- Do things out of love not out of obligation. When you do things you don’t want to do, they feel forced and not authentic. Doing the things you love to do boosts your self-confidence which better prepares you to do challenging things. You feel like you’re in greater control which lowers the stressful reaction you feel when you’re not.
- Plan some downtime in your schedule. Don’t be so busy that you don’t have time to relax. Make sure that you allow space in your life to do nothing. Forgo activities and obligations to sit still and reflect on life. It’s important to have time allotted to breathe without fear of not being productive.
Self-care isn’t just a buzzword these days. It’s a movement that commands attention. Taking good care of your physical, mental, and emotional health opens the doors to healing. It helps protect against disease and helps you navigate life’s most stressful moments with grace.
