Did you know that while pregnant your body only truly needs an extra 300 calories per day during your second trimester? So it’s not exactly eating for two as the old adage might say. That being said you are going to be probably a little more hungry while you are pregnant. It varies for every woman. Some are starving all the time, right from the minute the stick turns blue while others are so sick from morning sickness to stomach more than a few crackers and some ginger ale. If you are pregnant, finding yourself hungrier than usual there are some great healthy snack to keep on hand to make sure you feel satisfied and happy between meals.

Avocado Toast

This is a trendy snack popping up in bakery shops all over the place. You can make it easily at home for yourself in just a few minutes. Try to use whole grain bread that is 100% whole wheat flour so you are getting the extra fiber you might need. Then cut a ripe avocado in half, and mash it on top of the toast. Top with a little bit of smoked sea salt for that extra “umami” flavor that you’ll end up craving.

String Cheese

A little extra calcium is always good for a pregnant woman’s body, so keeping some low-fat string cheese on hand is a quick and easy snack.

Greek Yogurt With Homemade Granola

Many times store bought granola is loaded with extra fats and sugar. By making your own, you are going to be way ahead of the game with this healthy recipe. It doesn’t take very long, and can be stored for up to two weeks in an airtight container. Top your plain Greek Yogurt with it so that you have a snack that is filling and tasty.

Homemade Granola (makes 16 servings)
4 Cups Old Fashioned Oats
2 Tsp Cinnamon
10-15 Crushed Almonds
¼ cup Brown Sugar
½ Cup Unsweetened Applesauce
1 Tbs Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Mix the first four ingredients together in a bowl. Then add in the apple sauce and extra virgin olive oil. Bake in a 200-degree oven for an hour, stirring every 20 minutes until crisp and brown.
