Becoming a mother is a dream come true for many women, but this life transition also can be overwhelming. Your life that once had order and control now seems completely different, and there’s no chance of a schedule or plan in sight.
Being a first time mom is a challenge, but it’s also a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
At Reza Ahmadinia OBGYN, we have developed these tips for first-time moms in the High Desert region in order to help them adjust to life with their newborn baby.
How Can I Adjust to Life as a New Mom?
Stay as active as possible.
Light exercise is important when you are expecting, and you should continue these same routines once the baby is born. Talk with your doctor about any workout plan that you are considering in order to make sure that it is safe. Note that exercising can help you feel more energized and can also boost your mood at the same time.
Don't forget to take time out for yourself.
Motherhood can be overwhelming, and the opportunities to pamper yourself are few and far between. Be sure to schedule a visit to your favorite hair stylist every once in a while, or ask your partner to watch the baby while you take a quick trip to the spa.
You may be a new mother, and that may play a huge role in your identity now, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose who you used to be in the process.
Branch out from your maternity clothes.
When you first start showing that adorable baby bump, you probably invested in an entire maternity wardrobe. While these clothes might fit best in the days immediately following the birth of your child, be sure to find some new, comfortable, regular clothes that will make you feel good about yourself.
Make a game plan before you head out the door.
Pregnancy brain and mommy brain is an unexplained phenomenon, causing you to forget things along the way. Make a shopping list in order to minimize your time in the store and maximize your productivity.
Rest when you can.
You need your sleep, even if you can only get it in short intervals. Follow the age-old advice and sleep when your baby is sleeping. Your chores can wait. Your reading can wait — simply take time to sleep and get the rest you need.
Whether you are just experiencing your first pregnancy, or you’re a brand new Apple Valley mom with a newborn in your arms, you might feel a little overwhelmed by what lies ahead. These practical tips will help you maneuver through this next phase of your life with ease, without forgetting yourself along the way.
Remember that if you have any questions during your pregnancy and throughout the post-partum period, you are welcome to contact your OB/GYN at any time. We look forward to helping you adjust to this new part of your life and hope to answer any questions that you might have.
